NASSAU, BAHAMAS June 14, 2021— In an effort to mitigate the impact of growing passenger traffic and COVID-19 protocols, key stakeholders at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) have finalized plans to ensure that passengers can be safely and efficiently processed through the airport during what promises to be a busy upcoming summer travel season.

Nassau has been selected as a homeport for two cruise lines beginning this month. Following the first 7-day cruise, approximately 900 passengers will be departing Nassau for the United States on Saturday, June 19th, 2021. The airport anticipates heavy arrivals and departures of cruise passengers every Saturday and Sunday thereafter, and for this number to grow to 3,500 passengers each weekend by July.

In addition, summer projections for land-based passenger arrivals and departures at LPIA indicate steady recovery from the pandemic, with a potential additional 4500 passengers between Saturday and Sunday.

“We are fortunate that our largest source market, the United States, has been very successful with their vaccine distribution and there is significant pent-up demand for travel given the challenges and restrictions of the past year living with COVID-19. People are ready to travel and month by month we are seeing improvements in our passenger numbers.” said Vernice Walkine, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nassau Airport Development Company Ltd.

“During this busy summer travel period we wish to assure the travelling public that their safety is our paramount concern. Our overall objective is to make certain that a high level of efficiency prevails in the terminals coupled with excellent customer service resulting in a positive experience for our passengers,” she continued.

The airport continuously works with its key stakeholders to maximize the efficiency of operations and mitigate any potential challenges within its facilities. As a result, in 2020 LPIA was one of the first airports in Latin America and the Caribbean to achieve a COVID-19 Health Accreditation from the Airports Council International.

As the airport supports Nassau as a home cruise port and manages its recovering land passenger base, LPIA is offering the following tips to local passengers planning to travel this summer.

1. Given the volume of passengers that will be commencing cruises in Nassau, if possible, avoid travel on Saturday and Sunday and choose a slower day to begin and end your vacation or business trip. Also, consider travel during off peak times and look for flights either before 9:00am or after 2:00pm, which is a peak travel period at the airport.

2. When travelling to the US, particularly on peak days and times, ensure that you are at the airport 3 to 3.5 hours ahead of your scheduled flight departure time. Given the impact of COVID-19, passenger processing is slower and more complex.

3. Whether you are vaccinated or not, a negative COVID-19 test result (PCR or Rapid Antigen) and completed Attestation form (found on LPIA’s website at www.nassaulpia.com) is needed for all persons travelling to the United States. This will be required for check in with your airline and tests should be completed prior to arrival at the airport.

4. For travel within The Bahamas, a negative COVID-19 (PCR Test) is required if you are not fully vaccinated (two shots with the last shot given more than two weeks prior to travel) along with a Bahamas Health VISA for domestic check in.

5. Checked luggage should be taken to your airline counter. Very Important: Please remove old luggage tags prior to placing a new luggage tag for your destination. If you are travelling to the United States, once you present your checked bag(s) to your airline, an image of your bag(s) will appear on the airline counter video screen to confirm each bag is checked in for your flight.

6. Checked luggage should be taken to your airline counter. Very Important: Please remove old luggage tags prior to placing a new luggage tag for your destination. Your airline should tag your checked luggage to your boarding pass. For persons travelling to the United States, please ensure you see an image of your checked bag(s) on the tablet screen at the airline counter.

7. After check-in, passengers travelling to the US may be directed by an airport ambassador to wait briefly in the airport’s Summer Garden Lounge prior to proceeding to airport security screening and United States Customs for processing. This wait is to allow passengers to be processed in order of scheduled departure time. The lounge is a beautiful and comfortable outdoor space with amenities like food and beverage, WIFI, entertainment and limited shopping.

8. Passengers should have their passport and boarding pass available to enter the security screening process. Passengers will be required to remove jackets, belts, shoes and empty pockets, and remove laptops from carry-on luggage for the security screening process.

9. As LPIA is a US Pre-Clearance facility, each passenger will undergo inspection by a United States Customs & Border Protection Officer prior to leaving Nassau. Bahamians need a valid passport and police record or US VISA for travel. Family members living in the same household can be inspected together.

10. Once these formalities are done, you may proceed to your airline gate or enjoy the shopping and dining amenities available in the U.S. Departures Lounge. All gates are within a three-minute walk from anywhere in the US or Domestic/International Departure Lounge.

11. Upon your return or arrival to Nassau, remember you will need a Bahamas Health Visa and a negative COVID-19 PCR test for entry to the country if you are not fully vaccinated. If you are fully vaccinated, then you will need the Bahamas Health Visa and proof of your vaccination. These are to be presented to Bahamas Immigration along with your passport for admittance to The Bahamas.

12. This summer, returning residents will now have two additional options to complete their Bahamas Customs declaration forms and pay duties or claim exemptions. This is in addition to the current process of presenting a completed C17 Customs Declaration form to a Bahamas Customs officer for assessment.

  • Returning residents should consider downloading and using the new Bahamas Customs Exempt App to fill out their declaration electronically, upload their receipts and pay customs duties and/or claim exemption online prior to arrival in Nassau. Once luggage is collected, returning residents then only need to proceed to a
    customs officer for baggage inspection.
  • Bahamas Customs also has kiosks available at the airport that perform the same services as the App and allows for credit/debit card payments online or cash payments at the airport.

New Rules in Effect for Vaccinated Travelers

NASSAU, Bahamas, April 30, 2021 – The Government of The Bahamas announced updated public health measures and entry protocols for fully vaccinated travellers, stating:
• Effective immediately, Bahamian citizens and residents who are fully vaccinated – after receiving their second dose – will be exempt from COVID-19 testing requirements when travelling inter-island from New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco, Exuma and Eleuthera to any other island.
• Effective May 1, 2021, international visitors travelling to The Bahamas from other countries who are fully vaccinated and have passed the two-week immunity period will be exempt from testing requirements for entry and inter-island travel.

REQUIREMENTS FOR VACCINATED TRAVELLERS
Vaccinated travellers will still need to apply for the Bahamas Travel Health Visa and will be required to upload proof of vaccination (such as CDC or government issued vaccine record card) with their application in place of PCR test requirement. They will not need to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test prior to entry, submit to rapid testing mandates or complete the daily health questionnaire during their stay. At this time The Bahamas Government will only be accepting vaccines by Pfizer Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

REQUIREMENTS FOR UNVACCINATED TRAVELLERS
Travellers who are not fully vaccinated will be required to follow all existing entry testing requirements including applying for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa, providing proof of negative PCR test taken no more than five (5) days prior to arrival and completing the daily health questionnaire, as well as conducting rapid COVID-19 antigen testing if they are staying in The Bahamas for longer than four (4) nights and five (5) days.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TRAVELLERS
All visitors and residents will be required to apply for the Bahamas Travel Health Visa and adhere to health and safety protocols on-island such as mask wearing, social distancing and frequent hand washing among others. Health and safety remain our highest priority and we must continue to be vigilant.

Due to the fluidity of COVID-19, the Government of The Bahamas will continue to monitor cases across the islands and loosen or tighten restrictions as needed. The Bahamas is an archipelago with more than 700 islands and cays, spread over 100,000 square miles, which means conditions and instances of the virus can be different on each of the 16 islands available to welcome visitors. Travellers should continue to check the status of their island destination before travelling, by visiting Bahamas.com/travelupdates.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nassau, Bahamas (Oct 10)…..The Tourism Development Corporation (TDC) is pleased to announce that the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has recognized The Islands Of The Bahamas as a Safe Travels destination for having met its enhanced health and safety standards in line with its global Safe Travels Protocols.

Having developed these protocols specifically to rebuild the traveler’s confidence and to ensure that there is a coordinated public and private sector approach to the recovery efforts of the global tourism industry, the WTTC awarded The Bahamas the WTTC Safe Travels Stamp.  It is the World’s first-ever global safety and hygiene stamp for Travel and Tourism, especially designed amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and for other similar outbreaks. The Bahamas, through the TDC, will accrue both benefits and responsibilities as a user of the Safe Travels stamp to maximize its positive impacts.

“It is proving a great success, demonstrating its importance not only to destinations and businesses, but also to travellers and the hundreds of millions of people around the world who work in, and depend on, the Travel & Tourism sector,” stated Gloria Guevera, President and CEO of the WTTC. “More than 40 countries and 10 sub-regions are already utilizing the stamp as part of their re-launching strategies of their Tourism industries.”

The Safe Travels Protocols take WHO and CDC guidelines into account and are based on self-assessment of the protocols that are implemented in compliance with the Safe Travels Protocols for every aspect of the Industry, with guidelines established for airlines in conjunction with ICAO ‘s guidelines during Covid 19.

“The return of the visitor’s confidence to travel to revitalize the economy of The Bahamas is crucial to the well-being of our people and country and as such, the Safe Travels Stamp will allow those travelling to regain the necessary confidence and comfort as global standards are being met on each of the islands, as restrictions are gradually lifted,” said Janet Johnson, CEO of the TDC.

The TDC will be communicating with all stakeholders in The Bahamas as to the benefits and responsibilities for every tourism-related business which is given the stamp of approval for its implementation of the Safe Travels protocols and ongoing compliance.  Guidelines and protocols for what WTTC calls the “New Normal” have been developed for every sector of Hospitality and Tourism from Airports, Cruiseports, Attractions, Restaurants, Tours, Convention Centres, Car Rental Companies etc..

“When the visitor and also resident sees the Safe Travels stamp at a tourism-related business anywhere in The Bahamas, they will have the comfort level to feel safe and enjoy the destination and the particular experience, knowing that global standards have been met and appropriate protocols implemented, “said Minister of Tourism, Dionisio D’Aguilar. “The TDC has been authorized to ensure that every establishment in The Bahamas wishing to display the WTTC’s Safe Travels Stamp has met the programme’s guidelines and standards prior to receiving the stamp.”

“It is really gratifying to note that our implemented protocols and measures as part of the Tourism Readiness and Recovery plan, and the Sustainable Tourism Seal of Approval programme developed in conjunction with the IDB, have met the enhanced standards of the WTTC and enabled our designation as a Safe Travels Destination, “ he continued.

The WTTC’s Safe Travels Stamp will develop the instant recognition required to instill immediate confidence that safety measures have been taken for both resident and visitor alike.

NASSAU, Bahamas – On January 12, 2021 the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that all air passengers flying to the U.S. from a foreign country will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 viral test (PCR or Antigen test), taken no more than 3 days prior to the flight. This new regulation will apply to all travellers ages 2 and older, including U.S. citizens and international travellers. The order will go into effect on January 26, 2021.

Furthermore, any person who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last three months must be prepared to show documentation of recovery, which consists of proof of their positive viral test, coupled with a letter from a healthcare provider or a public health official, providing clearance to travel. Airlines will be responsible for confirming the negative test result or documentation of recovery for all passengers before they board, and will deny boarding to any person who does not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery, or chooses not to take a test.

The Government of The Bahamas has successfully implemented stringent measures to protect its citizens, residents and visitors, and is well positioned to adhere to this new order, seamlessly integrating the CDC’s testing requirements into The Bahamas’ existing COVID-19 protocols. Currently, visitors to The Bahamas who stay longer than four nights and five days are required to take a rapid antigen test on the fifth day of their stay, with a number of testing sites throughout The Bahamas approved to administer tests. This means travellers and residents alike, readily have access to the viral tests, now required to enter the U.S.

“The Bahamas Government will continue to work in accordance with the CDC to curb the spread of COVID-19, which has been our top priority since the onset of this global pandemic,” said Dionisio D’Aguilar, The Bahamas Minister of Tourism & Aviation. “Our journey has not been without bumps in the road, but we have made great strides in combatting this virus as evidenced by the very low case numbers we have now achieved. Visitors to our shores should have peace of mind knowing that we are making every effort to keep The Bahamas safe, and can now offer a turnkey, affordable and reliable testing process that meets U.S. requirements.”

All U.S. travellers to The Bahamas as well as Bahamian citizens and residents are required to abide by the CDC’s protocols to enter the U.S. An overview of these requirements, as well as FAQs, can be found on the CDC website.
For a list of approved COVD-19 testing sites in The Bahamas, as well as a full overview of The Bahamas’ travel and entry protocols, please visit Bahamas.com/travelupdates.

On behalf of our team here at Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD), I want to share important information regarding our airport’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

As passengers, employees, tenants and partners at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), your safety is always our first priority. Our comprehensive emergency response plan is currently activated and involves input from all primary stakeholders.

From the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, we have been in direct contact with the Bahamas Ministry of Health, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation, Bahamas Immigration, Bahamas Customs and other local agencies to ensure that our response takes into consideration the entire airport community.

Throughout our terminal buildings, we have placed additional hand sanitizing stations. Our cleaning technicians have also ramped up their activities in terminal, increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting flat surfaces, handrails and door handles. Arriving passengers will also notice that Bahamas Immigration has discontinued self-service kiosks and are now screening individual passengers to determine their specific travel history prior to arriving at LPIA.

To date, there are three confirmed cases (edited March 20, 2020) of COVID-19 in The Bahamas. We recognize that this situation is evolving and we will be updating our website and social media platforms with any new developments impacting our airport community.

I would also like to encourage you to continue to follow the Bahamas Ministry of Health at https://www.facebook.com/MOHBahamas/ for the latest information on the country’s overall approach to managing the threat of coronavirus.

You can find the latest coronavirus information as it relates to travel to and from LPIA on our website https://nassaulpia.com/lpia-coronavirus-updates or follow us @nassau_lpia on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We look forward to serving you at LPIA now and into the future. Our commitment is to continue to work with our partners to the safety and well being of our entire airport community.

Sincerely,

Vernice Walkine, President and CEO,

Nassau Airport Development Company Limited

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — In an effort to mitigate the impact of heavy traffic on operations over the Thanksgiving weekend, key stakeholders at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) have finalized plans to manage high passenger volumes. Starting Wednesday November 27th through to Monday December 2nd approximately 90,000 travelers will move through the country’s major gateway. Officials are working together to manage aircraft movement and passenger flows in terminal.

“During holiday peak travel periods we wish to assure the travelling public that firstly, their safety is our paramount concern. Our overall objective is to make certain that a high level of efficiency prevails in the terminals coupled with excellent customer service resulting in a positive experience for our passengers. We continuously work with the key stakeholders to maximize the efficiency of operations and our goal is to mitigate any potential challenges within our facilities and to achieve this, we must work collaboratively with our key stakeholders,” said Deborah Coleby, Vice President, Operations at LPIA.

Bahamas Air Navigation Services Division (BANSD) has committed to ensuring that Air Traffic Services (ATS) is adequately staffed to handle the projected increase in air traffic during the critical holiday period. A notice to airmen (NOTAM) will be issued encouraging local general aviation charters to operate flights outside of the peak period of 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. so that they are able to avoid the traffic and potential delays to their customers.

During these peak travel periods, it is not unusual for LPIA to experience air saturation because of the amount of commercial aircraft and additional private aircraft in the airspace.  Officials of BANSD have committed to work in tandem with the Miami Center to manage the flow of air traffic as efficiently as possible. Additionally, BANSD is scheduling its staff and boosting manpower to ensure that the demand and the saturation are well managed.

The Airport Authority has indicated that they will ensure that adequate staff members are deployed at all pre-board screening checkpoints as customary, during the peak travel periods between 11 a.m. – 3p.m. to manage the flow of traffic.  In addition, NAD personnel will be in place to manage lines with a view to reducing queue times.

Bahamas Customs and Bahamas Immigration will also beef up staffing over the Thanksgiving period and Bahamas Immigration will continue to deploy team members to assist arriving passengers and direct them accordingly to the booths or the kiosks.

With runway rehabilitation works in the final stages, LPIA will likely operate as a single runway facility through the Thanksgiving weekend. Contingency plans remain in place and the airport will employ best practices used during the summer travel peak to manage traffic on the airside.

Coleby offered additional tips for LPIA passengers travelling during the holiday peak:

  • Passengers should check-in at least three (3) hours prior to US-bound flights and two (2) hours prior to International departure flights with the exception of early morning flights.  LPIA opens at 4:30 a.m. daily. It is recommended that passengers traveling on flights between 6:15a.m. and 7:30 a.m. arrive at the airport at 4:30 a.m. Arriving early allows for sufficient time to check in, clear security, find your gate and enjoy airport amenities.
  • Thoroughly check your documents. Ensure that passports are valid. For US-bound flights, local passengers must be in possession of a US visa or a current police record issued within the last six months.
  • Pack wisely. Restrictions still apply on liquids, aerosols and gels. Remember the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 ounces or less per container for liquids, gels or aerosols; packed in 1 quart-sized clear plastic zip-top bag; limit of 1 bag per passenger.
  • While waiting on the security lines place coins, keys and any small metal items in the screening bin, remove jackets and outerwear and unpack your laptop and other devices. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes that can be easily removed. Leave gifts unwrapped. They may be opened for inspection as part of the baggage screening process.
  • Confirm travel details in advance. Days before your flight, check your reservation and determine baggage specifications. Consider travelling outside of the peak departure times. Early morning and evening flights are considered off-peak.
  • Stay connected by checking the airport website www.nassaulpia.com for the latest updates on flight schedules and information on parking, in-terminal services or new security regulations and procedures. Also, be sure to follow your individual airline carriers on social media for more specific flight details.
  • Use your time in-terminal wisely- Pick up last-minute gift items, a snack or magazine at one of our airport stores. Use free airport Wi-Fi to send emails or relax and enjoy our shopping and dining amenities at LPIA.

United Airlines Captain Jane Weeks is trading in her wings to drop anchors in the pristine waters of The Bahamas. Last week, the veteran commercial pilot made her final approach to Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), landing in her favorite destination and retiring as a commercial pilot. Flight UA1480/1539 from Newark, NJ arrived shortly after 1p.m. on Thursday October 17th. Captain Weeks and her crew were greeted with a water salute on the tarmac to mark the occasion. A pilot for more than four decades, Captain Weeks has brought thousands of visitors to Nassau over the years. This is her 29th year with United Airlines. “It’s been a long and wonderful career,” she shared from the cockpit. “I love Nassau! This is my favorite place to go. I wanted to fly this route everyday and I always wanted to do this as my last stop.” United Airlines General Manager at LPIA Barbara Chong and her team boarded the aircraft to congratulate Captain Weeks on her final flight and to thank her for the many years of service to the destination. When asked about her immediate retirement plans, Capt. Weeks said, “Looks like I’m coming back to go fishing!”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS November 21, 2019— This week, stakeholders at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) will meet to finalize plans for managing increased traffic over the upcoming holiday period. Officials estimate some 90,000 passengers will move through LPIA’s three terminals between Wednesday November 27th and Monday December 2nd as the peak travel season kicks off with American Thanksgiving.  Another surge in passenger traffic is expected between mid-December through to New Year’s Day.

On Friday, stakeholders from Nassau Airport Development (NAD), Bahamas Immigration, Bahamas Customs, Airport Authority, US Customs & Border Protection (USCBP), Air Traffic Services (ATS), Airline Operators, Airport Police and the Road Traffic Department will review Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs) and examine contingency plans.

Key consideration will be given to ongoing runway works at the country’s major gateway. In June, NAD partnered with BHM for major rehabilitation on Runway 09/27 (soon to be Runway 10/28) and Taxiway India at LPIA.  The works  include  the rehabilitation of the asphalt pavement surface to extend the life of the runway, in addition to the installation of new lighting.

Vernice Walkine, President & CEO of NAD estimates that the runway works will be completed before the end of the year even as the airport team prepares to meet the increase in traffic.  “After coming off of a strong October with 126,575 passengers representing a 6.29% growth YOY, we’re anticipating solid numbers in November, December and into early January. For the high season, our goal is to work closely with various stakeholders to mitigate challenges that may result from the increase in traffic. We want to ensure a positive passenger experience for all of our users,” she said.

“Throughout Thanksgiving, LPIA will operate as a single runway facility as we continue our efforts to improve the airport. We operated quite effectively during the peak summer days with all stakeholders doing their part.  Contingency plans remain in place for the runway rehabilitation project ensuring that our airport runs in a safe and efficient manner, meeting all international safety standards.”

Passenger overall wait times in terminal will factor heavily in the discussions among stakeholders. Particular focus will be placed on managing the flow in pre-security clearance areas, US Customs, Bahamas Immigration and Bahamas Customs during the peak periods of 12 p.m.- 3 p.m.

Airport Authority will fully staff screening areas at LPIA, with processing beginning at 5:15a.m. to accommodate early morning flights. Air Traffic Services has also committed to scheduling sufficient team members to efficiently manage commercial and general aviation arrivals and departures during peak periods.

Passengers should arrive at LPIA three (3) hours ahead of US-bound flights and two (2) hours prior to international and domestic flights. Travellers are also encouraged to communicate directly with their airlines for the latest flight updates and visit www.nassaulpia.com or follow @nassau_airport for operational updates from LPIA.

Airport Will Operate On A Single Runway Until Work Completed

NASSAU, BAHAMAS June 3, 2019— On June 17, 2019, Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) will begin an extensive runway rehabilitation project on Runway 09/27 (soon to be Runway 10/28) and Taxiway India at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA).

According to officials, the work will take place over a four to six-month period with a total capital investment of just under $20 million dollars.  For the duration of the project, LPIA will operate as a single runway facility. NAD has put contingency plans in place to reduce the impact to overall operations.

Once completed, the project will result in upgrades to asphalt, which will extend the life of the runways at LPIA.  Further, Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs) will be added to reduce the risk of damage to aircraft that overrun the runways. The project will also include the acquisition and installation of new LED approach lights on the runways to help pilots better identify the airport during low visibility operations.

Vernice Walkine, President & CEO of NAD said the runway rehabilitation is scheduled maintenance that must be done to ensure that LPIA continues to operate as a safe and efficient airport and meet all international safety standards.

“We understand the importance of the upgrades and are now in a position to invest the necessary capital to undertake the project at this time. There was no perfect time to do these necessary works, so we will have to manage the project with the goal of minimizing disruption to ongoing operations. We are working with key airport partners on contingency plans to manage the flow of air traffic and to ensure the usability of the airport’s sole runway during the rehabilitation process.”

The project will begin during one of LPIA’s many peak travel periods, but based on the projected timeline, NAD anticipates that the runway rehabilitation will be in full swing during the slower period of September and October with the goal of having works completed before Thanksgiving.

NAD has implemented contingency measures for continuous aircraft movement at the airport while in single runway operations such as the use of newly acquired equipment to remove disabled aircraft should the need arise, and scheduled maintenance (i.e. paving surfaces, lighting repairs) will be conducted during off peak hours (midnight to 5 am). During this period, LPIA will advise neighboring airports that it cannot be utilized for any airline diversions unless it is an emergency. In the event of inclement weather while the airport is operating with a single runway, ATC will follow existing protocol, suspending services at LPIA until conditions improve.

NAD will also continue to work closely with partners to capture and remove wildlife on the airside and the neighboring areas that might impede operations.

Walkine continued: “We would like the public to note that it is not uncommon for airports of our size and in this region to operate using a single runway.  Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia and St. Maarten all operate using one runway. During this period, we are asking the travelling public to exercise patience when arriving or departing from LPIA, as there will likely be delays resulting from the runway rehabilitation project.”

Motorists driving near the intersection of Windsor Field Rd. and Rock Plant Rd. are also advised to pay particular attention to heavy equipment movement in the area once work commences on June 17. Crews will conduct work between sunrise and sunset. NAD is asking all motorists to observe signage in the area and to exercise caution when approaching the intersection.

NAD to Release Airport Hotel RFP on January 21st

Nassau Airport Development Company Limited (NAD) is seeking proponents to design, finance, construct and operate an on-site hotel at Lynden Pindling International Airport. On Monday, January 21, the company will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) document outlining details required to bid on the proposed airport hotel project. Final proposal submissions will be due on Friday, May 24, 2019.

The hotel and facility would play an important role in meeting the needs of connecting or in-transit domestic and international travelers; and enhance the passenger experience by providing conveniences, quality services and amenities for both business and leisure passengers.

More information about this exciting opportunity is available in the attached Press Release.

Press Release – NAD to Release Airport Hotel RFP on January 21st

Starting next summer American Airlines will offer year-round service between Chicago and Nassau, the blossoming of a route that began as a seasonal winter service. The move strengthens the carrier’s commitment to the destination, rounding out its current roster of flights to The Bahamas from Charlotte, Miami, Philadelphia, Washington D.C and Dallas/Fort Worth.

“American has a long and proud history in The Bahamas and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our footprint next summer as our Nassau-Chicago service begins to operate year-round,” said Alfredo Gonzalez, the carrier’s managing director for the Caribbean.

“This new route will provide our customers flying to and from The Bahamas with year-round access to this important destination and connecting hub in the United States, where we currently operate more than 480 daily flights to more than 130 destinations around the world.”

The good news comes as the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) celebrates a banner year thus far having just posted a record-breaking summer travel season.

“We continue to be delighted with our 31-year partnership with American Airlines, a carrier which offers more than 130 weekly flights to six destinations in the country,” said Jan Knowles, NAD’s vice president of marketing and commercial development. “American Airlines provides a robust schedule of flights between The Bahamas and the United States helping to drive air travel growth.”

More than 3.5 million passengers passed through LPIA in the 2018 fiscal year with the airport serving 55 destinations via 24 airlines.

June 29, 2018:  With the advent of the busy summer travel season, the traveling public is advised that powder like substances 12 oz (350ml) or larger are now prohibited in the cabin of aircrafts and as such must be placed in checked luggage. Medically prescribed powder-like substances, baby formula and human remains are exempt and can be placed in carry-on bags. Other powder like substances such as sugar, flour, cosmetics and coffee and others that are more than 12 oz (350ml) must be placed in the traveler’s checked luggage.

As a result of the busy summer travel season and the added security measures, the travelling public is reminded to arrive 3 hours ahead of time for US bound flights.

For persons travelling on early morning flights between 6:00am and 7:00am please note that the doors of the airport open to the public at 4:00am. Most airlines with early flights begin check in at 4:30am. United States Customs and Border Protection Pre-Clearance opens at 5:15am.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are working with local aviation stakeholders to ensure these enhanced security measures are fully implemented.

The major implementation of these changes at LPIA will fall under the purview of the Airport Authority (AA) and the airlines that service US destinations. The AA is the entity responsible for security at LPIA. As the airport operator, Nassau Airport Development Company Ltd. will work with AA and the airlines to support the implementation of the changes and the passenger experience at LPIA.

These enhanced security measures will help to secure all commercial flights departing Bahamian airports that serve as last points of departure to the United States.

Passengers should stay connected to the airport and their airlines via social media for important updates:

2018_06_29 New TSA Screening Requirement for Powder like Substances – June 29 2018 – Final

NASSAU, BAHAMAS/MONCTON, NB; April 3, 2018 – Vantage Airport Group, which manages operations at both Lynden Pindling International Airport and Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport, today introduced the Rob Robichaud Vantage Airport Group Scholarship in Aviation.

The new scholarship offers CAD 9,000 to an international student to attend Mount Allison University in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada and enter the Bachelor of Science (Aviation) Program — a unique undergraduate program that pairs a degree with pilot training.

“This is the second education award established by Vantage and its network airports, and we are so proud to help facilitate the educational journey for Bahamian students studying abroad,” said Vernice Walkine, President & CEO at Nassau Airport Development Company. “Aviation is an essential sector for The Bahamas, and this is an excellent opportunity for a local student to learn about this industry and experience the power of building international connections.”

This scholarship is modelled after the education award established by Vantage in Kamloops, B.C. with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in 2016, which has been presented to two Bahamian students and since sparked interest in TRU from around the Caribbean.

“On behalf of Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport and Vantage Airport Group, we are very excited to launch this scholarship and further invest in our community in recognition of our past CEO Rob Robichaud,” said Bernard LeBlanc, President and CEO of the airport. “Through this scholarship, we are investing in our community and giving a student an opportunity for a Canadian learning experience, while strengthening connections across Vantage’s global network.”

Mount Allison’s Aviation program is offered in partnership with the Moncton Flight College. The Bachelor of Science degree program is one of only a few in Canada that allows students to earn an undergraduate degree that incorporates flight and ground school training. Students focus on subjects relevant to aviation such as geography, mathematics, and physics at Mount Allison; complete ground school training at the Moncton Flight College; and complete more than 200 hours of flight training.

The new Rob Robichaud Vantage Airport Group Scholarship in Aviation is named in honour of the late Edgar (Rob) Robichaud, past CEO of the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport, retired RCAF lieutenant-colonel, well-known community leader and past board member for several Moncton-area organizations.

The scholarship is available for the first time in 2018-2019 to a full-time Bahamian student in, or entering, the Bachelor of Science (Aviation) degree program. The scholarship will be awarded to one student per year at a value of $9,000, unless there are two equally ideal and qualified students, in which case two scholarships will be awarded at a value of $4,500 each.

Applicants interested in the Rob Robichaud Vantage Airport Group Scholarship in Aviation can learn more about the program and how to apply at www.mta.ca/apply.

Applicants interested in the Vantage Airport Group International Education Award at TRU can learn more www.tru.ca/truworld.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS; March 25, 2018 – North America’s bitter winter is sending residents hard-hit by one storm after another packing, heading for the sun and driving up numbers in visitor arrivals with the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) predicting the busiest Easter weekend on record, officials said yesterday.

“People in Canada and the U.S. who have suffered through a season of what felt like never-ending northeasters are just plain weary and worn down by the weather. The appeal of The Bahamas where they can bask under a shining sun and escape the harsh conditions is so inviting, trading the white of mounds of snow on the ground for the white of warm sand,” said Vernice Walkine, President and CEO of NAD, the company that manages the nation’s busiest airport, Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau. “For us, the important takeaway is that whatever is driving the uptick, we have to maintain the highest standards to ensure that our customers, visitors and locals who pass through LPIA, have the quality experience they deserve.”

In addition to NAD’s preparations to meet increased demand, airlines are adding seats. Air Canada and West Jet, both of which serve Canada and account for the bulk of increases in the non-U.S. international arrivals, have altered flight schedules and are flying at nearly 90% capacity.

On Saturday, March 24, LPIA handled 1,014 aircraft movements, nearly double the 600 or so movements on a typical day. One of the strongest segments was private FBOs, including Jet Aviation and Odyssey Aviation. Last year, the busiest travel day of the Easter holiday was the Saturday before Easter with some 23,370 U.S.-bound passengers flying over the 5-day period Thursday through Monday.

The prediction of a record Easter weekend came just days after NAD reported the best December and January in its 11-year history and said bookings looked strong for the coming months. Along with a brutal winter driving weather-weary sufferers south, a stronger U.S. dollar, increases in tourism marketing and the opening of Baha Mar are credited with boosting interest in The Bahamas. In one recent survey of visitors to Exuma, more than 50% said the swimming pigs led them to the destination. And Expedia released figures today showing that The Bahamas was among the top three destinations for regional travel.

According to Ms. Walkine, travelers will benefit from preparing for the holiday rush, including arriving extra early. “We had a great Easter last year and we are expecting an even better and busier one this year,” she said. “As such the public should be aware and encouraged to plan and travel wisely, arrive at least three hours ahead of their flight. That sounds like a lot of lead time, but we have created an atmosphere that makes the airport experience memorable so that it becomes an extension of the positive Bahamas vacation experience. We have comfortable lounges, restaurants, shopping and even outdoor patios to allow visitors to pass the time and get that last bit of sun prior to leaving. NAD and industry partners will also be hosting activities in the terminal to enhance the visitor experience.”

Walkine also had tips for those picking up passengers.

“Be aware of parking options, know the rules and conveniences around dropping off and collecting persons from the airport. We encourage persons picking up from the airport to park in the short term parking lot and we have made this affordable at $2 for a half hour,” she said.  This is far more economical and convenient than burning fuel to circle the airport while waiting for your guest or worse, parking in prohibited areas and being towed.

When 151,454 passengers landed at LPIA in December and another 140,314 in January, the numbers represented the highest figures since the pre-recession holidays of 2007/2008. December’s increase was the highest in a single month, up nearly 15,000 over the second best year a decade earlier. Preliminary results for March with Easter falling the 1st of April are even more impressive – up by 24% over 2017 arrivals to date and greater records expected in the next week.

More than 3.3 million passengers pass through LPIA every year with the airport serving 55 destinations via 24 airlines.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS; March 22, 2018  – Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD), the management company responsible for The Bahamas’ busiest airport, reported today that air arrivals at Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA)  during December 2017 and January 2018 were the highest in the company’s 11-year history and for the first time in a decade exceeded pre-recession travel levels.

Some 151,454 passengers landed at LPIA in December, 140,314 in January, the largest numbers since the pre-recession holidays of 2007/2008. December’s increase was the highest in a single month, up nearly 15,000 over the second-best year a decade earlier. Preliminary results for March are even more impressive – up by 24% over 2017 arrivals.

“The strong increase in air travel to LPIA is excellent news,” said NAD CEO Vernice Walkine. “While we are handling more passengers than ever before, we are also pleased that enhanced systems including pre-clearance check-in kiosks have made the LPIA experience smooth, efficient and enjoyable for passengers from around the world.”

The uptick in arrivals is being driven by several factors, according to airport officials. Among them, an increase in airlift, the return of Sunwing Airlines, strengthening of the Canadian dollar and a brutally cold winter in the U.S. northeast and Canada. They also credit a marketing and promotional ramp-up by Ministry of Tourism and destination partners, especially in Canada and specific markets in the U.S. and U.K. “Canada is driving growth in international arrivals all on its own,” said Jan Knowles, Vice President, Marketing and Commercial Development.

Canada has led the impact on the higher numbers with both West Jet and Air Canada seeing significant growth in their passenger numbers this season and capacity on flights averaging 89%.  The bitter cold and a change in flight times help account for the Canadian boost. British Airways also enjoyed about a 10% increase in air arrivals. According to another NAD official, a Baltimore to Nassau route operated by Southwest Airlines showed a strong increase over last year’s performance.

The Baha Mar factor is yet to be quantified but officials report that nearly every U.S. airline has added seats in anticipation of increased demand driven by marketing of the new luxury resort and casino. Various promotion boards’ marketing efforts are also credited with the image of Exuma’s famed swimming pigs driving traffic from far-off places to the islands of The Bahamas.

Overall, a 15% increase is projected in non-U.S. international seat capacity through June 2018.

According to Walkine, the company which has employed Bahamahost training for front-line staff across LPIA has focused on excellence in service delivery. That focus has paid off. Earlier this month LPIA walked away with third place honours when the Airports Council International announced its Best Airports in the Latin America and Caribbean Region.  More than 600,000 passengers throughout the region participated in the ranking process.

More than 3.3 million passengers pass through LPIA every year with the airport serving 55 destinations via 24 airlines.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS; March 6, 2018 – Airports Council International (ACI) World today announced the winners of its 2017 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) earned a third-place tied ranking for Best Airport serving more than two million passengers per year in the Latin America-Caribbean region.

2017 marks the seventh year of LPIA participation in ASQ surveys, and the second consecutive year that the airport has placed in the region’s top three.  Ecuador’s Guayaquil Airport earned first place, Mexico’s Los Cabos claimed second place, with LPIA and the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana in a tie for third.

ACI World presents awards to airports with the highest passenger survey ratings across 34 key performance indicators, including access, check-in, restrooms, shops and restaurants. It is also the only worldwide programme to survey passengers at the airport on their day of travel, delivering some 600,000 individual surveys per year in 42 languages in 84 countries.

“Since 2011, the team at LPIA has consistently elevated the passenger experience across every aspect of our operation. This second consecutive top three ranking from ACI World is a testament to these shared efforts to deliver a world-class airport experience to our valued passengers,” said Vernice Walkine, President & CEO, Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD). “Today’s award spurs our team to keep striving for the coveted top airport ranking in our region.”

This success is the result of several initiatives to improve the passenger experience at LPIA – from automated passport control kiosks that streamline the preclearance process to providing BahamaHost customer service training to front-line staff.

“Objective measurement and benchmarking are critical in driving performance in any business especially in such a competitive and dynamic one as an airport,” said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. “These winning airports have dedicated themselves to delivering a stellar customer experience. ACI World proudly recognizes the accomplishments of all airports in the global ASQ network. I look forward to celebrating with them in September.”

As the primary international gateway to The Bahamas, Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is the fourth busiest airport in the Caribbean. Services include scheduled and charter flights to the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and 23 neighboring islands in the Bahamas. In 2017, LPIA served 3.3 million passengers travelling with 23 airlines to almost 60 destinations.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NASSAU, BAHAMAS November 26, 2017— On Wednesday November 29, 2017, stakeholders at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) will conduct a full-scale emergency exercise. The drill scenario will begin at 6 p.m. with a call to NAD’s Operations Center from an MD80 aircraft inbound from ‘Safe-ville’ declaring an emergency landing at LPIA.

Local and international aviation regulations require airports to establish an emergency plan commensurate with the aircraft operations and other activities conducted at the airport. Regulations also mandate that a full-scale emergency exercise should be conducted at intervals not exceeding two years to evaluate the Emergency Plan.

In addition to passengers and airline crew, teams from local emergency response agencies including the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Royal Bahamas Defense Force, Civil Aviation Authority, Bahamas Air Navigation Services (BANS), Bahamas Air Accident, Investigation and Prevention Unit (BAAIPU), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Airport Authority, MED Evac, Bahamas Red Cross Society, Princess Margaret Hospital, Doctors Hospital and Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) will participate in the drill. Volunteers will pose as crewmembers and passengers involved in the incident.  The most recent emergency drill exercise at LPIA took place in December 2015.

Deborah Coleby, NAD’s Vice President of Operations says putting LPIA’s emergency plan to the test allows all agencies involved to assess their individual level of preparedness and orchestrate a coordinated response.

“Upon completion of the exercise, a hot debrief will be conducted and a final report generated will provide feedback by local and international evaluators. Improvements are made based on the findings of the final report and the the airport’s Emergency Plan is updated accordingly,” Coleby explained.

Wednesday’s exercise is expected to last approximately four hours. Passengers are advised that air travel to LPIA will not be impacted during the drill. NAD encourages travelers to proceed with their travel plans as scheduled.  Members of the general public are also advised that there will be emergency response vehicles in the vicinity of the airport during the drill.

Nassau, The Bahamas (April 1, 2017): Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) today marks a milestone, celebrating 10 years of operating Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) under a partnership with Vantage Airport Group and the Government of The Bahamas.

NAD began an anniversary countdown earlier this year, celebrating with a number of community activities. The private operating company also shared, on its website and social channels, a series of highlights and achievements that have helped make LPIA one of the top-ranked airports in the region. More recently, NAD recognized long-serving employees, a group of more than 60 people who have worked with the company since it was inaugurated in 2007, during a well-attended event at New Providence Community Church.

To further mark the occasion, Vantage Airport Group is gifting to NAD a custom art piece to be displayed at LPIA. The work will be created by local artist, Dede Brown, and will consist of several hundred fish painted in vibrant hues to capture the beauty and diversity of Bahamian sea life. It will be installed in a central, high-traffic area and will complement the airport’s existing art pieces that work together to create a uniquely Bahamian sense of place.

“It is a matter of great pride for me to share in this commemoration and celebration of this significant benchmark for the Lynden Pindling International Airport,” said the Honourable Glenys Hanna Martin, Minister of Transport and Aviation. “The last ten years have seen tremendous growth and enhancement such that our airport has distinguished itself not only in the region but globally for its beauty and standards of excellence.”

“NAD’s operations have transformed LPIA into a world-class facility that provides a welcoming first and last impression for our passengers,” said Vernice Walkine, CEO of NAD. “I am so proud to celebrate this anniversary and the success of our airport, which is due in large part to the power of this partnership, the strength of our operations and the expertise of our employees.”

“Vantage is delighted to share in this anniversary and commemorate a decade of operations at LPIA,” said George Casey, Chair and CEO of Vantage Airport Group. “Our partnership has led to a best-in-class facility with a high-performing team that drives innovation and best practices. The result is that LPIA has a well-deserved reputation as a leading airport in the region. I’d like to thank the Government of The Bahamas for placing their trust in us to operate this important gateway airport.”
