LPIA Redevelopment Project
From 2008 to 2013, the Nassau Airport Development Company oversaw a 5-year, $411 million redevelopment project that transformed the airport into a modern, efficient and culturally reflective facility.
Completed in three stages, the project created a 606,000 square foot terminal complex, with an additional 1 million square feet of aircraft operating surface, and the capacity to comfortably handle 5 million passengers annually.
Stage 1
US Departures Terminal

250,000 sq ft
$198 million
Completed in 2011
Stage 1 included a $198 million US Departures Terminal, which opened on March 16, 2011. This 250,000 square foot complex included 55 check-in counters and the most sophisticated and complex baggage system ever installed at a US preclearance facility. It also introduced unique features at LPIA including post-security roof top patios, green spaces, and Bahamian-centric retail and art, creating the airport’s modern sense of place.
Stage 2
International Arrivals Terminal

226,000 sq ft
$129 million
Completed in 2012
Stage 2 began with the demolition of the old US Departures Terminal in 2011 and included the construction of a 226,000 square foot International Arrivals Terminal and Pier at a cost of $129 million. Completed in 2012, this new facility included five new jet bridges, a state-of-the-art baggage claim system, Bahamas Immigration and Customs Offices, four restaurants, six hotel reception lobbies, and several lounges.
Stage 3:
Domestic/International Departures and Domestic Arrivals Terminal

112,000 sq ft
$84 million
Completed in 2013
The final stage of the redevelopment project included a 112,000 square foot Domestic/International Departures and Domestic Arrivals Terminal, which opened in the fall of 2013. This new terminal included 42 check-in counters and a range of improvements to systems and equipment, with modern baggage handling, security and sorting systems equipment. It also included nine retail locations, five food locations, bars and lounges, a bank and a post office, and three significant Bahamian art installations.
